Mike Avella Jr.

SVP, Government Relations

in

Mike brings with him extensive experience in legislative and regulatory affairs in addition to experience and education in health policy.

Prior to joining Dickinson & Avella, he served as Senior Associate Director of Governmental Affairs at the NYS Medical Society (MSSNY), where he worked to formulate the association's policy agenda and worked with elected officials and staff throughout the legislature and executive advocating on behalf of MSSNY. He advocated for policy to improve the medical and public health realm in New York, including successfully lobbying for New York's new vaccine mandate and consumer protections for prescription drugs.

Before that, he was a Senior Contracts Manager at DentaQuest, managing all aspects of the contractual relationships with four health insurance companies, including the largest payer in the state. He also monitored regulatory and legislative changes such as Medicaid updates for the state's team.

Prior to DentaQuest, he was a Plan Manager at New York State of Health. In this role he managed the contracts between NYS and a portfolio of insurance companies, ensuring their compliance with state and federal regulations and serving as the main point of contact for health insurance company staff.

Michael started his career as a Press Coordinator at the New York State Assembly, where for seven years he was tasked with managing the press, direct mail outreach and community relations for a growing delegation of elected officials from across the state. In this capacity, he also helped manage political campaigns for both incumbents and new candidates. He followed that up with a stint at the state Board of Elections where he honed his knowledge of campaign finance and regulation.

Mike has given back to his community via work on the executive committee of the Troy Kiwanis Club, as founder and leader of the local chapter of Team RWB and has helped lead a LLS Man of the Year campaign.

Michael holds a BS in Business/Economics and a Master of Public Health from the University at Albany School of Public Health. Mike was featured as an Albany 40 Under 40 Rising Star in 2021 and in City & State’s inaugural Who’s Who in Government Relations.
